Joanna Whittle - Recently I have had the opportunity to work alongside Julie and it is wonderful to see how she engages with the subjects she photographs. She creates open and tacit relationships with respect and a warmth which allows her to create the beautiful and intimate photographs she takes. Her photographs of circus performers both at work and behind the curtain are both immediate and reflective. They capture both moments of celebration and self-assurance where the subject engages the viewer through the lens, and those moments of unselfconsciousness where internal dialogues and human interactions move observed, seemingly by no one but the camera. Her use of light which illuminates the dark corners and hidden spaces of the circus, mimics the lighting of the performance, but instead illuminates the human emotions which emerge in these in between spaces.
Roger Ballen - 'Julie I am impressed with your goals and passion to express yourself and others'.
Tom Wood - 'Julie's work consists of really lovely images that are separate from the background and lit beautifully, they work so well as a sequence. Julie keep doing what you are doing'.
Sian Davey - 'This is a strong body of work, it is obvious that a lot of hard work has gone into this very personal project. The book is great, the project is lovely, and the video is very moving, there is nothing I would change'.
Jonathan Beer - 'The passion Julie conveys when discussing her images emanated from her and her images made me ‘feel’, I could determine that their was a story behind the images and that Julie is a natural story teller and uses her images to tell a story beautifully. Julie's images did not need many words to go with them, and she has captured the images in a way that just didn’t need words to make you feel what the images brought and in my opinion is a rare gift. The aesthetics of the photography was comfortably suited to the practitioner and the aesthetics are beautiful'.
Henry Iddon – 'Good to see some social photography from the community centre and school. Certainly lots of potential for long term projects'.
Claire Griffiths – 'Really enjoyed Julie's personal approaches, especially the ex-serviceman. Julie stick and drill down to what is important to you and to tell your story. Follow your heart and do what feels right to you!'.
Hannah Farrell - 'A very strong body of work, Julie has a lot of potential as a story teller. I particularly like the image of the beggar (hungry boy) image, love the contrast, strong colours and the semiotics with in the image'.
